The Return of Depression Economics Essay Example for Free

The Return of Depression Economics EssayClassical economists like Smith and Ricardo often argued that economic prosperity can be best achieved if the trade is left alone. They argued that the market alone is the most efficient mechanism of determining supply and demand, wages and labor supply. The market being the invisible hand removes inanition in the rescue. At the beginning of the 20th century, these assumptions were attacked by neo-classical economists led by John Maynard Keynes.Keynes argued that because wages are essentially fixed in the short-run, it is possible for an thriftiness to experience sluggishness (Keynes, 1936). This sluggishness causes temporary recessions, that if untreated may lead to depressions. The only means to treat temporary recessions is government intervention. Keynes (1936) argued that it is desirable for the government to either increase or decrease spending in order to boost the economy. This increase or decrease in spending may be facilita ted by increasing or decreasing interest rates (on the expenditure side of the economy). Now, the assumptions of both classical and neo-classical economists are being attacked. Paul Krugman (a Nobel prize winner), in his ledger The Return of Depression Economics, put his main arguments against mainstream economics (Krugman, 2008). Here are some of his main points 1) It is very possible for recession to occur even if an economy is in wide-cut shape. To illustrate this, he used the story of babysitting groups in Washington D. C. Here, couples agreed to babysit for each other. A special currency was used. Those who penury to babysit would get the currency while those who do not want to babysit will give the currency. However, because the economy is in good shape, nobody wanted to babysit. Couples pet going to social gatherings than babysitting. This creates a shortage of babysitters, which in effect caused the economy to experience recession. This is same case with government control of specie supply. Supposing the government increases money supply in order to boost the economy, the real effect may in fact a real decline in overall production. The good shape of the economy may well be an enough reason for throng to work less (which in the long run translates into lower economic output) 2) During economic prosperity, people usually invest their money to risky forms of investments. Supposing there are two sources of investments trust funds and bank securities. Trust funds invite more returns and of course, higher risks. Bank securities are more conservative in nature (low returns and risks). During economic prosperity, trust funds usually earn more, and thus people invest in it.However, when one trust fund fails, people will usually withdraw their investment out of the system. This creates panic (confidence decreases) and the economy experiences recession 3) And, panic can destroy wealth more easily than confidence can create it. Krugman noted that it took alm ost 100 years for the United States to accumulate wealth and only 5 years to destroy it (The Great Depression). In essence, a financial panic has a higher probability of occurring than a miraculous manna from heaven (due to soaring financial confidence). As Krugman noted, as more and more economies are being integrated into the world economy, the chances of experiencing recession in times of economic prosperity increases (Krugman, 2008). In short, economic prosperity may not be a bailiwick for economic certainty.ReferencesKeynes, John Maynard. 1936. Disadvantages of Unclean Environment

Disadvantages of Unclean EnvironmentAir polluted by many ways such that chemic gases, traffic, factories and global warming etc. Mostly mental st precipitate is polluted by chemicals uses. Usage of poison sprays on crops makes the way polluted. Such gases cause the pollution of air. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) be nontoxic gasses, nonflammable chemicals containing atoms of carbon, chlorine and fluorine. They atomic number 18 use manufactured of aerosol sprays, blowing agents for foams and packing materials as solvents, and as refrigerants. CFCs are somaified as halocarbons, a class of compounds that contain atoms of carbon and halogen atoms. Individual CFC molecules are labeled with a unique numbering system. For example, the CFC number of11 indicates the number of atoms of carbon, hydrogen, chlorine and fluorine (e.g. CCl3F as CFC-11). The best way to remember the system is the rule of 90 or adds 90 to the CFC number where the first digit is the number of carbon atom(C), the ra ndomness digit is the number of hydrogen atoms (H), and the third digit is number of the fluorine atoms(F). The total number of chlorine is calculated by the expression Chlorine=2(C+ 1)-H-F. In the example cfc-11 has one carbon, no hydrogen, one fluorine, and therefore 3 chlorine atoms.Whereas CFCs are safe to use in most application and inert in lower atmo do of import, they do undergo significant reaction in the upper atmosphere or stratosphere. In 1947, two University of California chemists, Professor F. Sherwood Rowland and Dr. Mario Molina, showed that the CFCs could be a major source of inorganic chlorine in the stratosphere following their photolytic decomposition by UV radiation. In addition, some of the released chlorine would mother active in destroying ozone in the stratosphere. Ozone is a trace gas located primarily in the stratosphere. Ozone absorbs malign ultraviolet radiation in the wavelengths between 280 and 320 nm of the UV-B radiation gain the Earths surface. C hlorine released from CFCs destroys ozone in catalytic reactions where 100,000 molecules of ozone can be destroyed per chlorine atom.In Antarctica a whole depletion is mystify due to destroy of ozone layer. Ozone in lower sphere creates the pollution but on the top sphere it prevents the UV rays and radiation to the earth from sun. These rays are also producing the air pollution.Carbon monoxide is highly poisoned gas. With cigars and cigarettes the CO produced is inhaled by the smoker and combines with the smokers blood to form car boxy hemoglobin.. Carbon monoxide is a by-product of combustion, present whenever fuel is burned without enough oxygen. It is very dangerous for emotional state. It does some 0.5% amount can be causes of death. It is very danger for environment. Carbon monoxide is produce by burning. It produces 75.7% from transport, 10.6% from burning of (vegetation, wood), and 2.4%from iron steel mill and other from domestic. Its more(prenominal) quantity produce from traffic. It produces most from by burning of things. CO is a main factor of air pollution. Vehicles are a big source of CO. CO2 has ample effect on air pollution. CO2 is a byproduct of combustion, present whenever fuel is burned in the presence of oxygen. It is badly effect on the environment. It is necessitate and makes thick layers which cause the heating. CO2 is also effect on the human living. Smog is polluted the air. Smog is the mixture of some gasses with S gas. This is a dangerous for environment. It produces the dangerous disuses.Transport is unique whish spread maximum air pollution. Smoke evolved from cars polluted the air 75.7%. About three quarter parts air pollution produce by smoke of car. This smoke creates many problems. Maine reason of air pollution is transport.Effect on environmentPollution has badly effect on environment. For living the good life need clean environment. For clean environment it essential be that pollutions should be slander. For human life it must be that air should be pure. Due to air pollution other pollutions are create. Air pollution is badly effect on everything. Air pollution disturbs the life of all species. Air pollution creates the much disuse and other problems. Such problems are so difficult.DisadvantagesDisusesAir pollution effects on human life so bad. Much disuse is produce by air pollution. Due to air pollution ozone layer effect which protect the ultraviolet rays from sun. Ultraviolet rays are coming from sun to the earth from hole of ozone layer. These rays are very harmful. From these rays produces serious disuse. Cancer is a horrible disuse. It is a serious problem for human. Its treatment is so expensive that a poor cannot bear its expensive. It reached the person to the valley of death. At the end stage a person dying. Such rays can also produce the eyes and skin disuses. Eyes disuses are horrible disuses. Smoke is produce breathing disuses. It also effect on the lungs. By this pollution hum an lives become difficult. A sick man nothing perform then that of healthy person. Disuses make the person lazy.Acid rainAcid rain is very harmful for the environment. Acid rains produce by air pollution. Most dangerous chemicals already present in air. When it is raining then many gasses are in air mixed with rain urine. In the air N2O, Chlorine, Nitrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are already present. After their reaction with rain water they get form of acid. This rain is called acid rain. Such chemicals mixed and appeared in the form of acid. Acid is affected badly on the environment. It produces the skin disuses. It damaged the buildings material. It is effect on the plants. One steer produces the oxygen for 36 children. It is very effect on the environment. Plants reduced the pollution but it effect on the plants. It makes the soil acidic which effect on the crops, position and trees. Growth of craps reduces. Acidic soil cannot produce a good quantity of wheat. It affects the buildings color and other material. Acid rain is the source of other pollution. This acidic water mixed with river it effect on the sea creature. So that from acid rain water pollution takes place. Water is necessary for human life this water can also absorbed by land.Overcome on the air pollutionFor healthy and a good life environment should be must clean. Garbage should be disposed of properly. Surrounding should be clean. Pure air is necessary for the good health. frontwardssts are very important. For pure air should be more plantings. Without air life is nothing. Planting is unique source to overcome the air pollution. Much is planting. Plants absorbed the CO2 and many other gasses. It rains mostly due to plants. Fore clean environment pure air is must be required. Air pureed by plants. Forbid to cuts the trees and forest. A government should be band on raw the plants. Government should support the scheme of planting. Trees where control the pollution they are als o much useful.Traffic should use the low for the traveling. Use the good quality of engines that evolved the minimize smoke. Overcome the smoke. It has poisoned gas like CO and CO2. These gasses has main rule to pollute the air. People should travel on local transport. They should act upon the traffic rules. Smoking is the main source of pollution.Factories use the electricity instead of burning thing. There smoke is highly toxic. So factories use properly. Trains are derived by electricity instead of engines. They do something for improvement the environment. Overall reduce the using of those things which causes the serious problem.

Social networking sites in the work place

Social net functional sites in the work placeBenefits and problems of companionable net profiting sites in the work placeIn the early 1990s, websites were used to shargon information with other bulk, though m whatsoever people felt that this was not personal enough, since it lacked the sense of togetherness. This led to the development of affable networking and favorable networking sites in the early 2000s. This concept was embraced and readily accepted by many people who felt the need for a more personalized agency of communicating through the web. (Sharpened.com, November 2009)Between 2007 and 2009, the craze astir(predicate) brotherly networking and in particular affable networking sites has grown rapidly and is continuing to grow at a very rapid rate. Accodring to Owyang, amicable networking sites like Facebook has a high growth rate with more than 60million active users, an middling of 250,000 new registrations every day since January 2007 and with an average 3% week ly growth rate since January 2007.(2008)Smith(2008) also states that the number of people using kindly networking sites has grown by 12% in the last sestet months from June 2008. The intimately popular friendly networking sites include the likes of Facebook and HI5, which according to Smith(2008), together confine 59million users(see figure 1) they sess also include internal affable sites for people working in the same opening move. Social networking sites are popular be come anyone who has assenting to the internet wad join any social networking site beholding as they are free and easy to join. This makes people spend most of their time on these social networking sites chatting with friends or just updating their information. This craze has also affected those in the study and they find themselves spending a lot of company time on these social sites (some of which are also internal social networking sites) and forget to work. The derive of time employees spend using so cial networking applications is a major reason why many trys do not like their employees using the social networking applications during locating hours.I believe that social networking and social networking sites do do their advantages that throw out be of great benefit to an attempt but they apprize also cause problems for an enterprise. In this paper, I am going to discuss the benefits/advantages and problems/disadvantages of social networking and find out if it is worth having social networking and social networking sites in the work place. Keywords social networking, social networking sites, social networking applications,Social networking nominate be broadly defined as a social structure made of people who may or may not have a common interest. WhatisSocialnetworking.com(2009) agrees with this definition by defining social networking as the grouping of individuals into specific groups, although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universit ies and high school, it is most popular online.I can define a social networking site as an internet site where people go to communicate and keep in touch with their friends and family. But according to Boyd and Ellison(2007), the terms social networking and social network should not be used interchangeably seeing as they do not mean the same. They(Boyd and Ellison,2007) decided to use the term social network which they define as, a web-based service that stomachs individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bound system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system.Social networking has many benefits to both individuals and enterprises. However many enterprises today are still sceptical about whether or not to permit their employees memory access to social networking sites and their applications and if they do grant access, they worry a bout the implications of allowing them to access these sites and applications, in terms of time spent on these social networking sites and using the applications. However, such enterprises should substantiate that there are benefits to using social networking sites and applications in the workplace that not only benefit the employees but also the enterprise as a whole. near of the benefits have been discussed below.Benefits of social networking in the workplaceThere are various benefits of social networking in the workplace and these include firstly, social networking and social networking sites can be used to enhance the enterprises image. If an enterprise has access to social networks, this can improve its image. According to Kelleher(2009), building a strong social network can help a stage business to improve its reputationand that social networks can boost the image of an enterprise as thought leaders in the field and nodes start to ack presentlyledge the enterprise as reliab le and excellent source of information/products that meet theircustomers requirements. Also a social network can help an enterprise expand its mart research. Social networking sites can be used by an enterprise to increase its customer base. This is true because an enterprise can advertise its products/services to the users of these sites the enterprise can also use these social networking sites to get new users for its products/services seeing as through the social sites, the enterprise can do a lot of those people who know/use their product/service and then target those who do not know about their Kelleher(2009) agrees with this for he says that using a social networking site like facebook can help a small business target a large audience without having to do much advertising. In addition, social networking sites can be used as a low-cost marketing besidesl. An enterprise can use social networking sites to advertise itself and its products and services. This is because in most soc ial networking sites, advertising of products/services is done for free and hence the enterprise saves the expenses it would have used on advertising.By having an internal social network an enterprise can keep records of the employees more easily. According to DiMicco et al(2008), a social network can be a new source of information for the enterprise, and new possibilities for understanding the workforce. This can enable the managers at the enterprise to better understand its workforce.Furthermore, social networking sites can help an enterprise to increase its customer base. An enterprise can mine its employees friends on social networking sites and target them as new customers for its products/services. Laudon and Laudon(2007) agree by saying that social networking can be used to expand the number of an enterprises business and social networks/contacts and also to link people through mutual business thereby enabling them to mine their friends for sales leads. This is an effective wa y for an enterprise to increase its customer base because it may be easier to convince people who have a mutual relationship with your employees to use your product/service than it is to convince people who have no relationship with the enterprise at all.Lastly, social networking can enable the enterprise to reach its target market/customers. an enterprise can use social networking sites to find out who their target customers are. According to Ladoun and Laudon(2007), an enterprise can do this seeing as users of social networking sites reveal a lot of information about themselves when signing up and using these sites and this information can be used to create advertisements that will appeal to their desired target customers/audience.An enterprise can however use social networking sites to have a closer relationship with its customers. An enterprise can form its own group in a social network where all its present and potential customers can join and gain access to the offers and dea ls that the enterprise has to offer for members of its group only. Kelleher (2009) agrees with this in that he says that social networks provide an opportunity for businesses to reach out and target groups of customers he also agrees that businesses can encourage customers to join their network of friends in the social networking site in order to access special discounts given only to those customers who are online contacts to the business.Problems of social networking in the workplaceThe major problem most enterprises have with allowing their employees access to social networking sites is employees spending too much time on the social networking sites thus affecting their(the employees) productivity. Keller (2009) agrees with this as he also says that organizations do not like having social networking in the workplace since most employees spend most of their time on these sites updating their profiles instead of doing their work. Laudon and Laudon(2007) also share the same view as they say, members of social networking sites spend hours surf pages, checking out other members and exchanging messages To support his argument, Keller uses the example that if every employee in an enterprise comprising of 50 employees spent 30 minutes a day on a social networking site per day, the enterprise would lose 6,500hours of productivity in a year This is a great amount of time that could have been used to do company work and be productive.Social networking can also lead to tension in the workplace. This is in terms of the relationships in the office. This is because some employees will witness that their colleagues are spending too much time on social networking sites while they are working to cover the workload for those who are on the social networking sites. This causes tension especially if those employees who spend a lot of time on the social networking sites are known by the otherAnother problem can be that of wastage of companys resources. This is in terms of ban dwidth. Most of the social networking site have some content that takes up a lot of bandwidth and if employees access these contents, they use up all the bandwidth making it impossible for other internet users to access the internet. This can also make the enterprise incur more costs because it will have to use more money to create more bandwidth that an support both the social networks content and those of the enterprise(Kelleher, 2009).The third problem of social networking in the workplace, according to Kelleher (2009), is the holy terror of viruses and malware Hackers are attracted to social networking sites because they see the potential to commit fraud and launch spam and malware attacks. There are more than 50,000 applications available for FacebookSome have the potential to be used to infect computers with malicious code, which in turn can be used to collect data from that users site. Messaging on social networking sites is also a concern, and the Koobface worm is just one example of how messages are used to spread malicious code and worms.A further problem may be that of social engineering. Social engineering has been defined by*** asReputation and legal liabilityEmployees may post information that may damage the companys imageTo stamp out or not to prohibitThere is no one solution to the problem of employees abusing their access to social networking sites. Some enterprises have tried using applied science and internal works to control the amount of time employees spend on these sites and the content that they can access. Though this seems to fail seeing as employees are devious people and will always get other ways of accessing these social networking sites wither by bypassing the security measures put by the enterprise or by accessing the sites from elsewhere. This causes a dilemma for the management of enterprises because they know that the world is moving towards social networking as the new mode of communication with customers and the outside world and they also know the benefits their business will accrue due to the use of social networking sites and they also know the implications they have when they (managers) allow employees free access to these sites. So what takeions does the enterprise have in its reach? According to Kelleher (2009), an enterprise has three choices it can use when dealing with the issue of social networking in the workplace. That is ban access to social networking sites, set limits and restrictions to use, and allow un superviseed access.i) The first option an enterprise has is total ban on access of social networking sites. This simply means that the enterprise does not allow employees to access any social networking sites from the workplace computers. This option is mainly used by organizations that want to keep the status quo. However most enterprises do not seem to opt for this option because they see it as a sign of no trust in the employees causing them to rebel against the enterprise and be less productive.ii) The next option is setting limits and restrictions for use. This simple means allowing employees access to some of the applications available on the social networking sites. Some enterprises may even go to the extent of only allowing legitimate employees access to the social networking sites for a limited amount of time. This strategy may not be total useful for an enterprise in that if some employees are granted access to the social networking sites while others are not, it may bring about hatred and jealousy in the workplace making the work environment tense and unfriendly.iii) Allowing unmonitored access. This is when the enterprise allows its employees to access social networking sites at any time and for whatever duration of time. This is the worst strategy of the three in that the employees will now be even more unproductive seeing that they have access to these sites without anybody monitoring what they are doing. This can also turn to be detrimental to the enterprise in that it has no control over the content the employees are posting and passing through the sites since the enterprise does not monitor what the employees are sending.Of the three options, the exceed would be to setting limits and restrictions for use. However, whichever option an enterprise chooses to use, it must ensure that the enterprises vital and critical information is protected from viruses and malware and from hackers. This can be achieved by having updates anti-viruses, a firewall to monitor and restrict access to certain internet applications, and social networking sites.(Kelleher, 2009)ConclusionSocial networking is a concept that is quickly gaining acceptance from everyone in all walks of life from students to CEOs and cured managers of big enterprises. They see social networking as a quick, cheap and effective way to keep in touch and communicate with their friends and family and customers and employees, in the case of CEOs and elder managers.Social n etworking sites are both beneficial and risky to an enterprise. The major thing that perturbs most enterprises of today about allowing employees access to social networking sites is that they have no control over the information being passed by the employees. Most social networking sites ask for so much information when one is joining and at times, this information can be used against the individual and may eventually be used against the enterprise.Kelleher(2009) suggests some tips for an enterprise should follow when allowing access to social networking sites these are-i) Restrict access. An enterprise can achieve this by controlling the amount of time employees spend on the social sites. One enterprise may allow employees to access these sites during their breaks or before/after office hours. While another may allow its employees to access only certain social sites and only certain applications in those sites that do not take up the enterprises bandwidth.ii) Educate and train empl oyees. Employees should be educated on the implications their activities on the social sites may have on the enterprise because most employees do not know that their actions on social sites can have a great impact on the enterprise. Management by Objectives (MOB) is one of the successful trends carried out by HP Company to measure its movement focus and approximation system. Therefore many companies were following this method for evaluating their cognitive operation management. The objective of this report is to identify the accomplishment management effectiveness and frequency of appraisal and excessively recognize the strength and limitations at HP Company and to make recommendations escorting their limitations and possible ways to overcome them (Armstrong 2005).Hewlett-Packard Hewlett-Packard (HP) is a multinational company marketing allover th e world. The management levels may differ from organizations to organizations thus every management has its own performance appraisal system to identify, support, ascertain problems, develop and appreciation to the employees regard their work performance (Sims 2002a, p. 81). Performance management evaluates the companys performance of the employees, which helps to give effective feedback in order to improve their employees work performance and to succeeded organization targets. The organizations targets are considered to be the long-term goals and to attain that performance appraisal system are to be carried as short-term goals. Controlling process, which is the most important role of any organization to monitor the individual employees performance and this helps to compare the employees performance and to analyses the overall management performance (Sims, 2002a). The basic need for controlling system is to initiate performance principles, attend performance of the employees and comparing it with the primary principles framed by the organization and finally taking required action to manage the performance.Hewlett-Packard applies the quality management therefore their organizations repel and objective is concerned about the ultimate customers. Therefore, HP employees practice the shunning called Management by Objectives (MOB). This final cause has structured the company objectives into two elements as long-term objectives and short-term objectives. These objectives were discussed between their distinct management levels that are communicating the performance criteria with the individual employees and as department vise were negotiated. The Management by Objective (MOB) scheme finds how the employees complete their task successfully, which indicates the process of mentoring and coaching. This process is made efficient by interconnecting the monitoring process at all levels throughout the HP Company. MOB too involves in the strategic planning of HP Company as a part that describes the aim or goal of the company. The companys top management involves in performance management system and introduces the performance appraisal process to the employees and given chances to fix their goals. Even the workers at bottom management level are encouraged to participate in the process of decision making by suggesting their views for attaining targets successfully this process is carried out for every six months between all levels. The Mobs objectives are to serve as day-to-day to help in making decision for tremendous growth of the company. Dave Packard believe in if HP made every individuals understanding their company objectives and goals and what the company planning for, then they could easily get every employees narrow attention towards attaining the goal. This is known as the HP Way.Frequency of AppraisalIt is a process of identifying the employees characteristics during the working period that basically indicates quant itative and also qualitative features of management performance. This can be identified by adopting certain appraisal methods in order to find how the employees work efficiently and perfectly. Accordingly performance appraisal has goal setting and performance valuation as arching targets. These targets are combined because of the performance management criteria used by the managers/supervisor in order to encourage the employees by giving proper command about how to transfer results to compete distinct levels of performance.1. death SettingIn HP Company they traditionally practice the HP Way, according to it they give respect and importance to each individual employee, therefore mess in top-to-bottom level management have determined their goals. Journal On Rapoport :: essays research papers fc

Human had a long history of showing their will to shape, control their meet and translateing the natural world. Thus, it is no surprise that mankind had gone this far in advanced technology. By improving our science and technology, we argon able to understand and research the world. This will allow mankind to create more stability thus avoiding some of the effects from great fluctuations of nature forces explore the truth of myths. With this nucleotide in mind, I find it to be a very common characteristic among the three articles by Rapoport (Australian Aborigines And The Definition Of Place), Hertzberger (Lessons For Student In Architecture) and, Deyner (African Traditional Architecture), which could peradventure explain the difference in the definition of place both by the author and the locale. It is not so much as the level of technology that these cultures inhabit in, but more relevantly, the period of technology improvement they are living in which defined their indigenou s landscape architecture.Rapoport believes that Australian Aborigines, "cooperated with nature rather than to subjugate it" (Rapoport, 1980p.44.) I found this to be a point that is somewhat accurate but not precise. The fact that these Australian aborigines did not advance in technology, are forced to accept nature as it is. As a result, they live their lives primitively through myths and stories instead of research and development. This is evident when compared to Deyners article, explaining that the more advanced (this increase is draw from the fact that these less nomadic Africans do trade and had farms) Africans developed more permanent dwellings, practical grammatical constructions (huts) which created a clearer boundary to identify their territory. However, the Africans minute building structures are still primitive and they are only constructed to serve a prime purpose like say, a small mud granary to inventory food. On the other hand, Hertzbergers "Lesson for student in Architecture" dwell deeper into concept of space and how we divide and articulate building structures when he mentioned, "question of sensing the indispensable distance and proximity between people ...purpose of space." (Hertzberger, 1991p.100)This level of division and detachment from natural dwelling showed a precise mentality of modern era gay though I could not say that we are now in the 20th century and do not appreciate or dislike nature. but the point is that, modern era human had so much control and complex thought that enable us articulate our confinement (concept of space).
